op5 in integration with complex robotic systems
Vanderlande Industries is a world leader in automated material handling systems and services for airports, distribution centres and parcel and postal sortation facilities.
Modern baggage handling systems ensure that the bags are brought to the right aircraft at the right time in an automated way. The baggage handling systems need to act on external information like planned, delayed and changed departures. All this requires a sophisticated control system, which in Vanderlande’s case consists of a number of Linux and/or Windows servers with related storage and communication systems. These operating environments are in most cases supervised by the airport’s own monitoring centers, even if some chose to outsource these tasks to Vanderlande IT Service desk.
Monitoring for integration
Vanderlande initially got sight of op5 Monitor when it was selected for monitoring their internal business systems. When they later started to look for a monitoring system for integration with their baggage automation products, op5 was a natural candidate in the evaluation In comparison with other open source alternatives, op5 Monitor was considered a more mature product, it was easier to configure, and above all it is supplemented with a first class product support.
“Our collaboration with op5 began with the certification of op5 Monitor for Suse Linux, which is the main platform for our systems,” said Peter Hanraets , IT Specialist at Vanderlande.
“We have already benefited greatly from the op5 open source community, providing lots of useful plug-ins. It has also turned out to be very easy to make your own adaptations, in any programming language.”
Advanced Monitoring Solution
Advanced Monitoring Solution, as Vanderlande has renamed their op5 integration, monitors servers, storage and databases to provide early warnings before critical capacity limits are reached. Another important task is to ensure that the systems are readily acting on external messages, to ensure that nothing gets stuck and the queues start to grow uncontrollably. Even control software, network units and uninterruptible power supplies are under constant surveillance.
”To summarize, it is the strong customer focus that really makes op5 stand out, and I can heartily recommend them to anyone who is looking for a new monitoring tool.”
– Peter Hanraets, IT Specialist at Vanderlande
Easy to adapt and scalable
During the course of the project op5 Monitor has shown to be well suited for this type of integration with complex industrial systems. Not least because it is very easy to adapt op5 to inevitable product changes. Other positive aspects are scalability, Vanderlande’s installations comprise everything between 25 – 1 200 licenses, and op5’s inherent user-friendliness. The latter greatly facilitates the training of end-users’ operations personnel.
Benefits of op5 Monitor:
- Robust and reliable system
- Easy development of plug-ins to meet new demands
- op5 keeps up with technological developments
- A plethora of useful features
- Backed by a strong support organization
- Industry: Transportation & Logistics
- The challenge: To meet the requirements of an operational environment that is extremely fault sensitive, and to certify the product for Suse Linux.
- The solution: op5 Monitor Enterprise, with the scalability required for logistic solutions of all sizes.
- The result: A robust, scalable and redundant monitoring environment that is easy to manage. The environment is optimized for Vanderlande´s specific usage scenario and integrated in a way that will avoid problems with future upgrades.
