PNP graph icons missing after upgrade to Monitor 6.1

In some cases the graph icons for hosts and services can disappear in the list views. To correct this, edit /opt/monitor/etc/nagios.cfg and change the line saying:

broker_module=/usr/libexec/livestatus/livestatus.o /opt/monitor/var/rw/live

to:

broker_module=/usr/libexec/livestatus/livestatus.o pnp_path=/opt/monitor/op5/pnp/perfdata /opt/monitor/var/rw/live

Then restart monitor:

# mon restart

Getting started with bischeck

This guide will help you get started with Bischeck and op5 Monitor

Until version 6.1 of op5 Monitor all monitoring was limited to static threshold, like the classic 90% utilization for a file system. In many business cases static type of thresholds are not enough since they only provide a limited granularity on when an alarm should be triggered. In the file system example it can be equally important to have a threshold for the speed of growth of the utilization. This mean we need to be able to define a threshold by calculating utilization delta over some period of time. Adaptive and dynamic thresholds with Bischeck means that we can:

Define different threshold depending on the time of the day
Define different threshold depending on the day of the week or month
Calculate thresholds based on historical data using mathematical functions like average, max, sum, etc

All this, and much more, can be done with Bischeck. Bischeck integrates with op5 Monitor over standard API like Livestatus and NSCA.

To be able to use bischeck and the benifits of dynamic thresholds bischeck must first be installed and NSCA needs to be configured.

What’s new

Dynamic and adaptive thresholds with Bischeck in op5 Monitor 6.1 – more information
Support for extracting raw status data through the HTTP API
Trend analysis graphs, improved user interface with new list filters, dynamic action button and more as described in this blog post.
Changed behaviour in disabling notifications: If you want to disable a notification on the notify script level, rather than on the nagios level (you should really consider whether the nagios level isn’t more appropriate), you can do so by creating a skin file, and removing read permissions on it in one of the skin directories. Technical information is available in the associated issue.

Known Issues

Dues to the refined layout in Ninja, Nagstamon is no longer able to fetch information from Ninja.

If you are using op5 Trapper, please upgrade to version 2.1 (available from our download area).

The acknowledged and unacknowledged service problems widgets will show display_name if it has been set. This behaviour will be changed in later versions to show the host + service names, which is how the Nagios cgis have always worked and op5 Monitor prior to version 6.1 worked.

Filters and List Views
op5 Monitor 6 is capable to monitor far bigger environments than ever before and that leads to new demands on how the data volumes need to be presented and filtered. We are now introducing Filters together with a new List View that makes it possible to customize the views.

Trend Analysis and Failure Prediction
Failure Prediction, a feature that can utilize historical performance data to predict when a service will hit warning or critical levels – for instance, that hard disk space may run out in the next few months, allowing these issues to be handled well in advance. op5 Monitor 6.1 also supports Adaptive Thresholding, allowing for a more flexible way of setting warning levels that takes historical business loads and recurring traffic peaks into account, thereby further reduce the number of alarms caused by sudden but not un normal peaks or loads in the data center.

Additions to the API
In this development step of the API we will provide a way to extract the data from your op5 Monitor system.

When upgrading or re-installing op5 Monitor prior to version 6.1, local configuration is overwritten. To restore the local configuration, replace /opt/monitor/etc/synergy/services.cfg with a recent backup copy.

Starting with op5 Monitor 6.1, the local configuration is not overwritten. Instead, the new configuration is available as services.cfg.rpmnew. To utilize the new default configuration, services.cfg.rpmnew must be manually merged with services.cfg.

Logserver installation problems

When installing op5 Logserver on a machine that has been updated with packages newer than what was available when Logserver was released, the installation script might run into conflicts.

To work around this problem, remove the offending package from the rpm directory and re-run the installation.
