Is it possible to monitor IBM i (AS/400)?
Yes, there is a nice Java plug-in for operating system IBM i on hardware IBM Power.
(Operating system previously named OS/400 (OS400), i5/OS (i5OS).)
(Hardware previously named, AS/400 (AS400), iSeries, System i.)
.
It's named check_as400. This plug-in is not included by default because of Sun Microsystems JRE licensing regulations. However, the plug-in can be downloaded free of charge from nagiosexchange.com
Pre-requirements for this plug-in to work:
1. The IBM i (i5/OS, OS/400) operating system.
2. There must be English messages in the system.
3. The user account used to connect must be configured with: no menu, English messages, English numbering (decimal points)
.
The following describes the /magic/ we can achieve with an IBM i system:
1. Using the check_snmp_load via SNMP, we can determine the value of the CPU load in an IBM i system.
2. Using the Java plug-in check_as400 via telnet, we can determine CPU Load, DB Load, Free Storage, Jobs, Active Jobs, Check if a job is running, Check if a subsystem is running as well as OUTQ and Message Queue monitoring.
It would seem that OUTQ is of most interest to those setting systems in production (in an IBM i system, e.g. all print queues are called out 'queues'.
Versions and such: The Java plug-in requires the installation of a Java Runtime Environment. We have successfully tested it with med Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6.
Version 0.18 av check_as400 is recommended.
