Nyx Security AB has developed a system for real-time video analysis that may be used in association with closed-circuit-camera-based surveillance, preventing and reducing theft, vandalism, and other unauthorised activities. Surveillance cameras have been installed on clients’ premises all over the country, including schools, production complexes, stores, hypermarkets, construction sites, and marinas. At a 24-hour manned surveillance central in Ludvika, the Nyx operators will receive an Info Boxalarm when a camera detects motioring this way, surveillance personnel and/or the police can be summoned immediately.

A special refinement is provided by loudspeaker equipped cameras through which the operator can request the intruder to vacate the area.

The system is intelligent enough to be able to filter out irrelevant motions such as those produced by animals, passing cars, or swaying tree branches. On the premises of each customer are placed one or more cameras, along with a video server with appropriate routers. The video server transmits image signals via an encrypted Internet link to the surveillance central in Ludvika.

For some time now, Nyx has monitored all client-based equipment using an op5 Monitor which means that the company’s technical personnel receive an alarm (via SMS or e-mail) as soon as a unit has failed or a connection is broken. This enables very rapid response to operational disturbances at the same time as it allows trouble-shooting work to be carried out in a very transparent manner. ”Before we implemented op5, we did not have as good a control on our production environment; it took too long to troubleshoot when cameras or other client-based equipment went down. Now, we can avoid all the de- tective work and, instead, can proceed directly to the problem when things don’t function as they should.This means that not only could we trim down our service organization, but also, that the level of service to our customers has increased considerably”, says Robert Karaszi, Chief of Operations for Nyx Security.

Flexibility

Nyx had already at an early stage assessed the market for surveillance systems and we were convinced that the op5 Monitor was the ideal product for such a market.
”op5 provides a very good overview and one is able to construct one’s own plans and decide for oneself exactly what to focus on. Moreover, the system is price-competitive, robust, and adaptable, while being based on an open-source code – a feature that makes it simpler for all parties”. It took only a few days to install op5 at a basic level for monitoring of about 1,600 cameras, servers, and routers. At a later stage, Nyx intends to make the system more proactive through monitoring also of the camera’s operating temperature and the fun- ctioning of its servo-motors. ”As a company, op5 is easy and flexible to work with.They have many competent and experienced advisors on staff who provide us with invaluable support in the form of tips and advice, even insofar as construction of the network is concerned”, concludes Robert Karaszi.
